David F. McCaffrey, age 73, longtime resident of Ansonia, passed away on Tuesday, November 28th at Bridgeport Hospital after a brief illness.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, David remained in Connecticut after studying organ and theology at Fairfield University, where his uncle, Father Victor F. Leeber, S.J. was a founding faculty member. David went on to get a master's degree in organ from Yale University School of Music.
Music and playing the piano and organ were his passions. He taught music at St. Joseph's High School in Trumbull and then was the longtime Director of Music at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport. You could regularly find David in the Choir loft at area Churches, either leading choirs or playing the organ at mass. David's notoriety as a musician gained him multiple invitations to perform organ concerts at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. David is survived by his brother, Thomas Marchitelli of Waltham, Massachusetts as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Interment will be private at the family plot in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, Massachusetts. A local memorial mass took place at the Church of the Assumption, 61 N. Cliff Street, Ansonia, CT this Saturday, December 9th at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's honor to the Fr. Victor F. Leeber, S.J. Scholarship at Fairfield University.
